Lan Su Chinese Garden and PDX Jazz present Jazz in the Garden, a summer music series held in the early evening splendor of Portland's most intimate venue. Featuring six concerts Tuesday evenings July 16 through August 20, the series includes local, national and international artists.

Come enjoy this amazing selection of artists and musical stylings from the following artists: the Mali-based BKO Quintet, local musicians Mike Horsfall & Tjaderade, Hailey Niswanger as she presents her new group MAE.SUN, China Moses, Connie Han, and the Bobby Torres Ensemble as he remembers performing at Woodstock with Joe Cocker "with a little help from his friends."

About the Performers

BKO Quintet

BKO Quintet's music is born from a meeting between five established artists. This gathering provides a journey into the heart of the contemporary Mali.

Ibrahima Sarr, powerful percussionist, masters with ease of the djembe drum and has traveled Oumou Sangare. Fassara Sacko whose voice takes you from aback, differs from other griots in traditional celebrations. Yoro Sidibé's grandson, Nfali Diakité , with his infernal "tournes", also sings and plays his gifts in animist ceremonies celebrated by his peers. Abdoulaye Kone, master of djelingoni develops a unique psychedelic style. He is the descendant of Djeli Baba Sissoko, Tiken Jah Kafoly, Salif Keita to tour outside the Mali borders. Finally, Aymeric Krol, experienced of internationals courses grooves on its strange drums. For the past 10 years he often settled in Bamako where he worked with several artists. Today, his encounter with Ibrahima Sarr gives birth to the project: BKO Quintet.

Bobby Torres Ensemble: Remembering Woodstock — With a Little Help from My Friends

Bobby Torres Ensemble: Remembering Woodstock — With a Little Help from My Friends Bobby Torres Ensemble presents a look back at Woodstock and some of the iconic music played that weekend with this series ending showcase. Bobby performed with Joe Cocker and The Grease Band at Woodstock — the first and largest three-day outdoor live music festival to date — in the summer of 1969 at Max Yasgur's Farm in Woodstock NY with more than 500,000 attendees.

"Looking back at Woodstock there were so many songs in that era that was motivational to the youth movement. At that time identities were being claimed by rebelliousness of what to wear, how one is suppose to look, not being respected, and equal rights. These songs represented the time; There were songs of love - Evil Ways, Darling Come Home Soon, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, If I were A Carpenter, and Somebody to Love. There was music performed in recognition of who we are; I Shall Be Released and Everyday People. As a kid I used to listen to Olatunji Drums of Passion, and one of his songs was Jingloba which Santana covered. It's great to look back and relive these songs of an era that is now 50 years. My ensemble will perform memorable compositions by Tim Hardin, Bob Dylan, Carlos Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Creedence Clearwater, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Joe Cocker, John Sebastian, among other favorites." — Bobby Torres

China Moses

China Moses is a high voltage soul/jazz diva with a career as a singer as well as presenter for MTV France, TSF Jazz Radio and more. The daughter of Dee Dee Bridgewater and director Gilbert Moses was born in Los Angeles and raised in Paris, France. Her albums brought her work with renowned names like Guru, DJ Mehdi, Karriem Riggins, Meshell Ndegeocello, Anthony Marshall and sound engineer Bob Power.

After her the release of her first single "Time" at the age of 16, more successful albums followed. With the pianist Raphaël Lemonnier, they released the album "Crazy Blues" named by the UK "Times" as one of the Top 100 albums of 2013.

She is the rare young, female artist - capable of swinging with the finest and drawing on her innate mastery of tempo. Her R&B heritage allows her to smile around a phrase, carry emotions across a lyric and infuse profundity in every note. Surrounded by a cross-genre cadre of musicians, China Moses is poised to reinvent the Jazz Vocal archetype for a new age, jettisoning that which is unneeded on her trajectory - taking listeners beyond the known to a universe uniquely her own.

Connie Han

Pianist and provocateur Connie Han has created an edgy blend of modern and traditional jazz with her incendiary debut CRIME ZONE. At 23, this young lioness is on a fast-climbing trajectory to jazz stardom with rave reviews from The New York Times, Jazziz Magazine, Downbeat Magazine, and more. According to Downbeat Magazine, Han has "already absorbed the post-bop piano masters" with "all the technical mastery she'll ever need." The New York Times describes her as "the rare musician with fearsome technical chops, a breadth of historical knowledge and enough originality to write tunes that absorb your ear easily." Weaving in and out of the tradition, Han pays tribute to McCoy Tyner, Mulgrew Miller, and Kenny Kirkland with her own unique edge and fire at the piano.

Hailey Niswanger presents MAE.SUN

Hailey Niswanger presents MAE.SUN Saxophonist, composer and vocalist Hailey Niswanger is proud to present the debut album from her newest and most innovative configuration yet: MAE.SUN. Her new album, "Vol. 1: Inter-be" showcases MAE.SUN's eclectic sonic palette ranging from contemporary jazz to soulful funk and neo-soul. She takes listeners on an immersive, genre-bending journey rooted in the hope for universal harmony. "This music is for the world, honoring and influenced by the interdependent nature of reality," says Niswanger.

Mike Horsfall & Tjaderade: A Tribute to Cal Tjader

Mike Horsfall & Tjaderade Mike Horsfall is in demand as a composer, arranger, recording artist, concert soloist and educator on both vibraphone and piano. He has performed with Chuck Redd, Leroy Vinegar, Rebecca Kilgore and Gary Hobbs, and has recorded with Pink Martini, the Nu Shooz Orchestra and with Tall Jazz, a trio he co-founded in 1989 which was voted into the Jazz Society of Oregon's 2010 Hall of Fame. Mike serves on the music faculty at Willamette University and Mt. Hood Community College.

Doors for series pass holders open at 6:30 p.m. Door for non-series pass holders open at 6:45 p.m. Will Call opens at 5:30 p.m. Please note that on the evenings of the event, Lan Su Chinese Garden will close early at 6 p.m.

Seating is general admission. Limited seating is provided on garden folding chairs as well as open seating on the stone railings along the Zig Zag Bridge. Pillow cushions will be available for those seated on the stone railings. A no-host bar with wine, beer, soda and mineral water will also be available. The Teahouse will be open during the concerts serving food, wine & tea (first come, first served; no reservations). Teahouse seating requires a $10 per person minimum purchase of food and beverage from the Teahouse.

Event will go on as scheduled rain, shine or heat. No outside food, beverages, or chairs allowed. No exchanges or refunds. You may donate your ticket(s) back to Lan Su Chinese Garden if you are unable to use them. You will receive a receipt as a tax-deductible contribution for the face-value paid for the ticket(s) (does not include processing fees). All donated tickets, along with your name and address, must be received by in the mail, at the Garden Shop no later than one (1) hour prior to event opening. An acknowledgment letter for the value of your donation will be mailed to you.
